Watson back, Cotchin rested

JOBE Watson, Paul Chapman and Dean Cox will make their pre-season debuts this weekend but a host of big names have been rested.

Watson will make his first appearance for the pre-season when Essendon tackles Richmond at Wangaratta on Saturday.

He will be joined by Michael Hibberd and Jake Melksham, who has recovered from a broken hand.

But gun father-son recruit Joe Daniher is not in the Bombers' squad, despite hauling in 12 marks in an intra-club game last week.

Richmond has rested some of its biggest names with Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Ivan Maric among those to miss the NAB Cup match. Former Crow Chris Knights, midfielder Reece Conca and defender Steven Morris will also miss the trip, but Jake King will play after having five bouts of off-season surgery.

Collingwood has adopted a similar rest policy for its trip to Perth to face West Coast on Sunday, with Darren Jolly, Dayne Beams and Brent Macaffer among seven Magpies who played in the NAB Cup first round who are staying in Melbourne.

But the Pies will unveil No.19 draft pick Ben Kennedy.

It's a different story for the Eagles, who have recalled Dean Cox (finger) and Josh Kennedy (ankle) for their first hitouts of the pre-season.

"Josh was ready to go in the last game but just had a very minor tweak of his ankle, and we didn't want to stress him by playing on it," coach John Worsfold said.

"He's raring to go.

"'Coxy' is back, but he hasn't really missed any training anyway, so he's right to go."

North Melbourne is resting Majak Daw and Drew Petrie for its trip to Townsville to play Gold Coast, while Brisbane will face GWS in Wagga without a long list of first-choice players including Daniel Rich, Daniel Merrett and best-and-fairest winner Joel Patfull. But the Lions have named ruckman Matthew Leuenberger in his return from an Achilles injury.

Tom Scully will miss with a minor knee injury.

Geelong has named premiership heroes Paul Chapman, Andrew Mackie and James Kelly, while Scott Thompson, Brent Reilly and Jason Porplyzia return for opponents Adelaide.

Yesterday Hawthorn named its squad for tomorrow night's clash against the Western Bulldogs, including Brad Sewell, Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis for their first NAB Cup appearances.

The Dogs today made a change to their squad, replacing the injured Dylan Addison with No.5 draft pick Jake Stringer.

Hawthorn will be without Cyril Rioli (ankle), Brian Lake (calf) and Paul Puopolo (knee).
